Blackbook by course
Your course’s blackbook, explained
A blackbook is the bound report you submit with your final-year project. Its front pages are the same in every course; its chapters depend on whether you built a system, ran a study, argued a legal question or designed a building. Pick your course for its chapters, project ideas and what examiners look for.
Engineering, Computer Science & IT
Blackbook: a project built with coding · 7 chapters: Introduction, Survey of Technologies, Requirements and Analysis, System Design, Implementation and Testing, Results and Discussion, Conclusion.
Commerce, Management, Arts & Science research
Project report: a study, no coding · 8 chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, Research Methodology, Field Study, Profile and Analysis, Data Analysis and Interpretation, Findings and Recommendations, Conclusion and Scope for Future Research, Bibliography and Annexures.
Law dissertation & research
Dissertation · 6 chapters: Introduction, Conceptual Framework, Legal and Regulatory Framework, Judicial Approach, Comparative Analysis, Conclusion and Suggestions.
Architecture & Design thesis
Thesis report · 6 chapters: Introduction, Literature Study, Case Studies, Site Analysis, Design Program and Concept, Design Development and Conclusion.

What is the same in every course
Whatever the course, the report opens with the same front pages and closes with a conclusion and references. Each has its own guide, with a sample:
Questions
Is the blackbook format the same for every course?
The front pages are: cover, certificate, declaration, acknowledgement, abstract and table of contents. The chapters are not. A course with coding documents a system (requirements, design, implementation, testing); a commerce or management course reports a study (literature review, methodology, data analysis, findings); law and architecture have their own structures. Each course page lists its chapters.
Which courses submit a blackbook?
Final-year students in most degree courses submit a bound project report, and in Mumbai and much of Maharashtra it is called the blackbook whatever the course: BSc IT, BSc CS, BMS, BAF, BCom, BCA, engineering and others. Elsewhere the same document is called the project report, dissertation or thesis.
My course is not listed here. Which page should I use?
Use the course closest to the kind of project you are doing. If you are building software, any of the computer science and IT pages applies. If you are doing a survey or a financial study, use a commerce or management page. The start page lists more courses, including school projects.
Do these pages replace my college’s guidelines?
No. They describe common practice. Where your department has issued a format, a chapter list or a page limit, that comes first, and these pages cover what it leaves open.
