What Is a Blackbook? The Final Year Project Report Explained

By · · 3 min read

In short

A blackbook is the formal project report final-year students in India submit with their project, usually bound in a black hard cover. It documents the problem, requirements, design, implementation and testing of the project in a fixed chapter structure, and it is assessed along with the project demo and viva.

Key takeaway

A blackbook is the formal, bound report that documents your final-year project. It follows a fixed structure (front matter, then chapters from introduction to conclusion), usually runs 60 to 100 pages, and is marked together with your project demonstration and viva.

Who needs a blackbook?

Final-year students in most Indian undergraduate and postgraduate technical programmes submit one, including:

  • Engineering and technology: BE, BTech, diploma and polytechnic in every branch
  • Computer science and IT: BSc IT, BSc CS, BCA, MCA
  • Commerce and management: BCom, BMS, BBA, BAF, BBI, BMM, MCom, MBA
  • Law: LLB, BA LLB, BBA LLB and LLM dissertations
  • Science and arts: BSc, MSc, BA, MA, pharmacy
  • Architecture and design: BArch, BDes and design theses
  • School students: Class 10 and Class 12 project reports

The word "blackbook" is most common at Mumbai University affiliated colleges, but the report itself exists everywhere. The chapters differ by stream: a BCom research blackbook has research methodology and data analysis chapters, a law dissertation analyses statutes and judgments, and a software project documents its system design.

What does a blackbook contain?

A blackbook has two parts: front matter and chapters.

Front matter

  1. Cover page (project title, student name, roll number, degree, guide, college, academic year)
  2. Certificate signed by the guide, head of department and examiner
  3. Declaration by the student
  4. Acknowledgement
  5. Abstract (a one-page summary of the project)
  6. Table of contents, list of figures and list of tables

Chapters

A technical or software project usually has seven chapters (below). A commerce, management or science research blackbook typically runs Introduction, Research Methodology, Review of Literature, Data Analysis and Interpretation, Findings and Conclusion, then Bibliography and a questionnaire. For a technical project:

  1. Introduction: background, objectives, scope and applicability
  2. Survey of technologies: why you chose your tech stack
  3. Requirements and analysis: problem definition, requirements, planning (Gantt chart), use case diagrams
  4. System design: modules, database schema, ER, class, activity and sequence diagrams
  5. Implementation and testing: code approach, test cases and results
  6. Results and discussion: test reports and user documentation
  7. Conclusion: significance, limitations and future scope

How is a blackbook assessed?

Examiners look at three things: whether the report matches the project you built, whether it follows the required format, and whether you can explain it in the viva. A well-structured blackbook with clear diagrams makes the viva easier, because it is the document the examiner questions you from.

How long does it take to write?

Written from scratch, a blackbook typically takes two to four weeks alongside development. Most of that time goes on formatting, diagrams and front matter rather than on the project itself.

Faster ways to produce one

  • Start from a template. Our Blackbook format guide lists the standard structure and typography.
  • Generate a first draft with AI. The BlackBook AI Blackbook Maker writes every chapter from your project title and description, in the structure your stream uses, with cover page and front matter, which you then edit and export as PDF or Word. See pricing.
  • Study a reference project. The Blackbook Store has verified reports with source code from past students.

Whichever route you take, the report must describe your project accurately. Read it, correct it and make sure you can defend every section in the viva.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called a blackbook?

+

Because the final printed report is traditionally hard-bound with a black cover, especially at Mumbai University affiliated colleges. The name stuck for the report itself.

How many pages is a blackbook?

+

Most blackbooks run 60 to 100 pages including front matter, diagrams and test cases. Your college may set a minimum, so check your department guidelines.

Is a blackbook the same as a project report?

+

Yes. Blackbook is the common name, mainly in Maharashtra, for the final project report in almost every stream: engineering and IT, commerce and management (BCom, BMS, BBA, BAF), law, science, arts, architecture, and school projects in Class 10 and 12.
