BSc CS blackbook project

A BSc Computer Science project is judged on the problem it solves and how well the report explains the approach: algorithms, data structures and why you chose them. A clear methodology chapter separates a strong CS report from a generic one.

Chapters of a BSc CS project report

After the front matter (cover page, certificate, declaration, acknowledgement, abstract, table of contents), a typical BSc CS report has these chapters. Your department’s guidelines come first where they differ.

  1. Chapter 1: Introduction

Background, objectives, purpose, scope and applicability, achievements and how the report is organised.

  2. Chapter 2: Survey of Technologies

Each technology or tool you used: what it is, why you chose it and the alternatives.

  3. Chapter 3: Requirements and Analysis

Problem definition, functional and non-functional requirements, Gantt chart, hardware and software requirements, use case diagram.

  4. Chapter 4: System Design

Modules, database schema and ER diagram, class, activity and sequence diagrams, algorithms, UI design and security.

  5. Chapter 5: Implementation and Testing

Implementation approach, key code, unit, integration and user testing, and a test case table.

  6. Chapter 6: Results and Discussion

Test reports and results, and a step-by-step user guide.

  7. Chapter 7: Conclusion

Conclusion and significance, limitations and future scope.

What examiners look for

  • Explain the algorithm in the report with pseudocode and its time complexity, not just the code.
  • If you compare approaches, put results in a table with the same test inputs for each.
  • Cite the original algorithm or dataset properly in the bibliography.

Questions

Can a BSc CS project be a machine learning project?

Yes, and many are. Report the dataset, the preprocessing, the model and its accuracy on data it was not trained on, and be honest about limitations.

Is a group project allowed for BSc CS?

Many colleges allow groups of two to four. Each member’s contribution is often asked about in the viva, so the report should make the division of work clear.
