BArch blackbook project

The BArch thesis report documents a design project from site study and case studies to concept, programme and final design. Drawings carry the design, but the report has to justify every decision with research.

Chapters of a BArch project report

After the front matter (cover page, certificate, declaration, acknowledgement, abstract, table of contents), a typical BArch report has these chapters. Your department’s guidelines come first where they differ.

  1. Chapter 1: Introduction

Background, need for the project, aim, objectives, scope and methodology.

  2. Chapter 2: Literature Study

Design principles, standards, codes and area norms for the building type.

  3. Chapter 3: Case Studies

Two or three case studies with a comparative analysis and inferences.

  4. Chapter 4: Site Analysis

Location, climate, topography, access, surroundings, bye-laws and SWOT analysis.

  5. Chapter 5: Design Program and Concept

Area programme, zoning and adjacencies, concept and design strategies.

  6. Chapter 6: Design Development and Conclusion

Design evolution, structure and services, sustainability, materials, drawings and conclusion.

Questions

What chapters are in a BArch thesis report?

Usually introduction and aim, literature and case studies, site analysis, design programme, concept and design development, and conclusion. The list on this page follows that order.

Should drawings go in the report?

Key drawings and diagrams, reduced and captioned, usually do. Full sheets are submitted separately.
