How to choose your LLB topic

  1. Pick a question the law has not settled: a new Act, conflicting High Court rulings, or a gap between a statute and practice.
  2. Check that the judgments are available to you in full, on your college’s database or the court’s own site, before you commit.
  3. Decide early whether the work is doctrinal (statutes and cases) or empirical (interviews, surveys). Most LLB dissertations are doctrinal.
  4. Frame it as research questions, two or three, that your conclusion will answer one by one.

Questions

How do I choose an LLB dissertation topic?

Choose a question, not a subject. "Bail" is a subject; "whether default bail is applied uniformly by High Courts" is a question. Check that the judgments are available to you in full before you commit.

Should an LLB dissertation be doctrinal or empirical?

Most are doctrinal: statutes, cases and commentary. Empirical work with interviews or surveys is accepted and valued, but needs more time and your guide’s approval of the method.
