Black Book Cover Page and Title Page: Format and Sample

By · · 3 min read

In short

A black book has two front faces: the hard cover, usually black with the title, your name, the degree, the college and the year in gold, and the title page inside, the first page of the report. The title page carries the project title, a line saying what degree it is submitted for, your name and roll number, your guide, your department, college, university and academic year.

Key takeaway

The cover is the black hard binding: the title, your name, the degree, the college and the year, in gold. The title page is the first page inside: the title, a line saying which degree it is submitted for, your name and roll number, your guide, then your department, college, university and academic year. If your college gives a title page format, use it word for word.

The cover (the binding)

A black book's cover is usually black with gold lettering. In common practice it carries:

  • the project title, in capitals
  • your name, or the names of everyone in the group
  • the degree (for example B.Sc. Information Technology, B.E. Computer Engineering, B.Com.)
  • the college name
  • the academic year

The binder prints this from what you give them, so give it to them typed, exactly as it is on your title page. Some colleges also want the title and year on the spine of a thick report.

The title page

From top to bottom, the usual order is:

  1. The project title, in capitals or bold, often in quotes
  2. What it is: "A project report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of"
  3. The degree and the branch or specialisation
  4. "Submitted by", then each student's name and roll number (or enrolment or seat number)
  5. "Under the guidance of", then the guide's name and designation
  6. The college logo, if your college uses one
  7. The department, the college and the university (or board)
  8. The academic year

Sample title page

"[PROJECT TITLE]"

A project report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of

[DEGREE, for example BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING]

in [BRANCH OR SPECIALISATION]

Submitted by

[Student Name] Roll No. [Roll Number]

Under the guidance of

[Guide's Name], [Designation]

[College logo]

DEPARTMENT OF [DEPARTMENT]

[COLLEGE NAME]

[University or Board]

[Academic Year, for example 2026-27]

For a group, list every member with their number, one per line.

Some boards and colleges fix this page's wording. For example, MSBTE's capstone project report has its own title page, shown word for word on the MSBTE format page. Where yours does, that wording replaces the sample above.

Common mistakes

  • A title on the cover that differs from the title page, the certificate or the declaration by even one word
  • A guide's name without the designation (Prof., Dr., Asst. Prof.)
  • The previous year's academic year, left in a senior's file
  • A blurred college logo copied from a website instead of the official file
  • A page number printed on the title page
  • Spelling mistakes in names: check every name against the college's records, because it is printed in gold and cannot be corrected

Where it sits

The title page is the first page of the report, before the certificate and declaration, the acknowledgement, the abstract and the index page. The full order is in the black book format guide, and the whole process in how to make a black book project.

Making it

A black book written with BlackBook has its title page filled from the details you enter (title, names, numbers, guide, college, year), in your college's own wording where BlackBook has your college's format. Check every name before you print.

Frequently asked questions

What is written on the cover of a black book?

+

Commonly the project title, your name (and your group members' names), the degree, the college name and the academic year, in gold lettering on the black hard cover. Some colleges also ask for the university name or the college logo.

Is the cover page the same as the title page?

+

Not quite. The cover is the hard binding on the outside. The title page is the first printed page inside, with the full details and the "submitted in partial fulfilment" line. Many students call both the cover page.

Is the title page numbered?

+

No. The title page carries no page number, though it is counted. Roman numbering (ii, iii) usually shows from the certificate onwards.

Should the college logo be on the title page?

+

Many colleges place their logo above the college name on the title page. Use the official logo file from your college, never one copied from a search.
